Personal Story - News Style

"White" Hispanics"
By: Robert Rivera

Glendale, NY - Late Saturday evening two individuals, Scott Schneider and Robert Rivera visited the local Atlas mall in Glendale, NY. The two had travelled to the theater located in the mall to see the new Terminator movie. The events that unfolded after were shocking for many. Hispanic residents of the area had mistaken the two as both being white and proceeded to insult them in Spanish.

Glendale, NY has always been known for its less than colorful neighborhood. The majority of the inhabitants there are white and those who aren't follow the customs and culture of a traditional white family. To these people it is as if there is no world beyond the boundaries of their neighborhood. It truly is a sight to see as the neighborhoods around them are quite the contrast.

"It isn't any surprise that they mistook them as whites. I don't think the people of Glendale know what a minority is. Even those who would be considered minorities in other neighborhoods, consider themselves to be white in a sense", exclaimed one resident in Glendale when hearing the news.

When the two heard these insults, the light skinned Puerto Rican, Mr. Rivera, confronted the group. Immediately the group apologized not wanting things to escalate and dispersed soon after. Many were happy to see the problem resolved by peaceful means. Not too far was the boundary to Brooklyn where had this occurred this would have most likely resulted in a brawl leaving several injured. On the other hand, people in Brooklyn would not have made this mistake or made it as easily as the residents of Glendale. Yet here these people make an honest mistake and choose nonviolent means to resolve problems. Some would call it cowardice while others call it wisdom. What can be said is that many people had different intakes on what occurred.
